Pico Abadías (3,279 m) is one of the three-thousanders located within the boundaries of the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park in the Aragonese Pyrenees. To reach the summit, the normal route is usually taken, starting from Besurta or Renclusa and passing through the Portillón Superior. It is a relatively easy peak to conquer, always considering that we are in high mountain terrain, and the views of the South Ridge of Maladetas from its summit are spectacular. Climbing a three-thousand-meter peak in the Pyrenees is always a great activity, but... what if we climb it?
Climbing a three-thousand-meter peak is the most elegant way to reach the summit of one of these massive granite formations in the Pyrenees. The "South Direct" (330m 6a) is one of the classic climbing routes par excellence in the entire Pyrenean range. Eight rope lengths over more than 300 meters will take us to the top of Pico Abadías.
The ascent is usually divided into two days. On the first day, we make the approach, setting up a bivouac at the foot of the south face of Abadías. This bivouac is already an experience in itself. We will enjoy the purest surroundings and rest to gather strength for the climb the next day.
The "South Direct" follows the south face of Pico Abadías on extraordinary quality reddish granite, with sustained difficulties ranging from Vº grade to 6a. One of the most spectacular moments of the ascent is reaching the "Gárgola", a natural balcony accessed once the 40 meters of the seventh pitch are climbed.
