BEST CLIMBING AREAS IN TARRAGONA

The province of Tarragona has some of the best areas in the world for sport climbing. Discover our selection.

Catalonia has become a global reference for climbing. Every year, thousands of climbers from around the world visit its sport climbing areas, attracted by the quality of the rock, the beauty of the sectors, and above all, the favorable climate of the region.

Tarragona boasts some of the best climbing sectors in Catalonia, and it's no wonder that more and more climbers visit these legendary sites year after year. These places offer great weather, easy access to the sectors, short approaches, excellent cuisine, superb local wines, and a wide variety of climbing routes that vary in style and difficulty.

Here are our top 3 favorite climbing areas in Tarragona:

SIURANA: The queen of crimps.

Siurana is a paradise of compact limestone rock. With its natural beauty and over 1600 climbing routes, it is undoubtedly one of the best climbing areas in the country. High-difficulty routes prevail, and during the winter months, it is common to find a large number of professional climbers attempting some of the world's most challenging routes in sectors like El Pati or El Campi Qui Pugui. The best time to climb in this area is from October to late April. In Cornudella de Montsant, there is a wide variety of accommodations available, making it an excellent base for climbing in Siurana and other nearby areas.

MARGALEF, pockets and more pockects!

Here, physical climbing predominates, with two-finger pockets and holes. The rock is conglomerate, quite compact, and it gives rise to overhangs and highly explosive routes. Approaches range from 1 to 30 minutes, and the town of Margalef itself offers all services and abundant accommodation options. Margalef is undoubtedly one of the most popular climbing areas in Catalonia, so we should be prepared to find many people on weekends. Climbing is possible here year-round, but the busiest months are usually spring and autumn.

MONTSANT, amazing views and endless routes!

It has rock similar to Margalef but with longer and more continuous routes. Its star sector is Raco de Misa. It takes about a 40-minute uphill walk to reach this sector, which doesn't prevent it from being crowded during the months of better friction. The quality of its routes and privileged views make this climbing area very popular. It's definitely worth a visit and can be easily combined with Siurana, Arbolí, or other surrounding areas.

GENERAL LOGISTICS

For climbing in any of these three areas, you can base yourself in Cornudella de Montsant. Here you will find a variety of accommodations, markets, bars, and all services. There is a climbing shop, Goma II, where you can find all the gear you need. Ideally, having a car is recommended to reach the different climbing areas. From Cornudella, Siurana is 5 minutes away, Margalef is 40 minutes away, and Montsant is 15 minutes away.

(Translated by Google) Take the long route course: two days, the first one took us to combat Montserrat, where we went from a theoretical explanation with exercises in the place to climbing and practicing what we saw. At all times checking and explaining why we do what we do at each stage. Day two: straight to one of the caps, where we immediately began to climb applying what we had learned with a long route of multiple meetings. You finish the course with not only tools to be able to do it alone, but with a way of thinking when it comes to Set up your rappelling or your meetings to be able to adapt to any situation! Super recommended and the best predisposition of Santi!! Super serious, and always very clear with each step we took.

Santi is the best climbing guide you can imagine. As a reference, we two are 6a-7a climbers, but we wanted a local guide to help maximize efficiency in a foreign area. He was highly recommended to us by a friend who Santi guided a few months back, and he was as wonderful as described. He takes his role as Guide seriously and comprehensively, from helping you plan ideas for areas to concentrate on, considerations of weather and season, logistics for where to stay and how to get there (he picked us up one day, and we met him in our car another), as well as making himself available to help with any other questions or needs for the trip as a whole (not just the climbing part). Our long chain of detailed texts show how dedicated and sincere he is in wanting to help plan the best trip possible for you. This was highly unique, unexpected, above and beyond, and much appreciated. Before you've even met, he treats you more like a friend coming to visit Spain than a client that he is just doing business with, and that warmth goes a long way and sets him apart from most any other guide I've experienced (i've had great guides in my life, so this just reinforces Santi's particularly special character). Like I really felt like we were friends, and still feel like we are, as he reaches out and keeps in touch still and I really appreciate that relationship. Humanity, sincerity, and kindness in business--what a crazy (wonderful) concept! As a climbing guide specifically: he is consummately professional, impressively knowledgable and safe, as well as comfortingly sensitive to your climbing abilities and needs, and tailors each day with climbs that are perfect for you--if you want to be comfortable or if you want a little/big challenge, if you want to experience highlights of an area by switching up crags in the same day. He knows the areas so well and of course knows how to choose the walls that are in the shade or in the sun for whatever time of day or season you are climbing. There is so much variety and fun for either multi or single pitch too. In addition, when we were all climbed out for the day, he took the opportunity to show us the beauty of the local areas, playing also a photographer and travel guide. He also went home to let us borrow his guide book to other areas that we were headed to later, and kept in touch to make sure the rest of our trip went smoothly. So nice! Here is a person who treats his job as a climbing guide and ambassador for the area with such deep consideration and earnestness, and who treats his role as a human being with exceptional kindness and faith. We are so grateful that he came into our lives as a climbing guide and as a friend. Thank you Santi for being you, and please everyone call him now for any guiding adventures (he travels to guide too!) Also, his rates are so fair and reasonable. And you will be so happy if he is available to take you on an adventure with him! Cheers!

First of all, I want to thank Santi - our rock climbing guide - for an excellent teaching!!⚡️
He was consistent, attentive to our strengths and weaknesses, inspiring confidence and really professional (technically and psychologically)!
I finally overcome my fear of lead rope climbing which followed me for a long long time… A friend of mine had his first time real rock climbing and now he already knows both types (lead and top) of climbing and belaying!🤯
And it hasn't felt like a boring studying with a tired of all this annoying tourists instructor. Santi was behaving not just as a mentor, but also as a friend of us🤝🏻
Hope to climb together one day again✨🏔️
